High Water Bill in Beaumont? How to Check for a Hidden Leak

Before you call anyone, a few free checks with your water meter can tell you whether water is leaking somewhere you can’t see, and roughly how much.

Short answer

Turn off every tap and appliance, then watch your water meter for 15 to 30 minutes. If it moves, water is going somewhere. Rule out toilets and irrigation first. If it still moves, the leak may be in a wall, the yard line or under the concrete slab.

  • Beaumont-Cherry Valley Water District bills every two months, so a leak can run for close to 60 days before a bill shows it.
  • One unit on your bill is 100 cubic feet, or 748 gallons.
  • A leak of only 6 gallons an hour adds about 11.6 units to a 60-day bill.
  • Water runs $2.64 to $3.85 per unit in 2026 once pass-through charges are added, so that leak costs roughly $34 to $45 a cycle.

Why water bills jump

A higher bill doesn’t always mean a leak. Start by ruling out the everyday reasons, then look for the ones that point to hidden water loss.

Normal
Summer wateringHot, dry months in the Pass mean sprinklers run longer. A seasonal jump is common.

A longer billing periodCheck the number of days on the bill. A few extra days can raise usage noticeably.
Normal
Rate or tier changesSame usage, higher price. Compare the units used, not just the dollar total.
Check
A running toiletOne of the most common causes of a sudden jump, and easy to fix.
Check
An irrigation leakA broken sprinkler line or stuck valve can waste a lot of water unseen.
Check
A hidden supply leakA pipe leaking in a wall, the yard line or under the slab runs around the clock.

Tip: Compare this bill with the same month last year, not last month. That takes most of the seasonal difference out.

The meter test: step by step

Your water meter is usually in a concrete box near the curb, with a lid you can lift. Many meters have a small triangle or star-shaped leak indicator that spins when even a little water is flowing.

  1. Turn everything off. Taps, dishwasher, washing machine, ice maker, sprinklers, and any pool or fountain fill.
  2. Look at the meter. Note whether the leak indicator is moving, and write down or photograph the reading.
  3. Wait 15 to 30 minutes without using any water. An hour is better if you can.
  4. Check again. If the reading changed or the indicator is still turning, water is being used somewhere.
  5. Shut the house valve (if you have one) and check once more. If the meter stops, the leak is inside the house. If it keeps moving, the leak is likely on the line between the meter and the house, or in irrigation.

Be careful with the meter box. Lids can be heavy and boxes sometimes hold spiders or standing water. Don’t touch the district’s valve on the street side of the meter.

What water actually costs in Beaumont

This matters more here than in most places, because Beaumont-Cherry Valley Water District bills bi-monthly, not monthly. Most leak advice online tells you to watch your monthly bill. In Beaumont there is no monthly bill, so a slow leak can run for close to 60 days before anything looks wrong on paper.

One unit on a BCVWD bill is 100 cubic feet, which is 748 gallons. Single family service is tiered, and rates rose on 1 January 2026.

Single family tierUnits per cycleRate per unitWith pass-through
Tier 10 to 16$1.18$2.64
Tier 217 to 34$1.45$2.91
Tier 335 and over$2.39$3.85

The pass-through charges matter. On top of the tier rate, BCVWD adds $0.60 per unit for SCE power and $0.86 per unit for imported water, a further $1.46 per unit in 2026. A 5/8 inch meter also carries a fixed bi-monthly service charge of $39.20 whether you use water or not.

What a leak costs here. Because the tiers stack, a steady leak does not just add water. It pushes the whole bill into a more expensive tier.

Leak ratePer dayExtra units per 60-day cycleExtra cost per cycle
1 gallon an hour, a fast drip24 gallons1.9$5 to $7
6 gallons an hour144 gallons11.6$34 to $45
30 gallons an hour720 gallons57.8$168 to $222
60 gallons an hour1,440 gallons115.5$336 to $445

Rates change. These are the 2026 figures from the district’s published charge schedule, and the board can revise them at any time. Check your own bill and BCVWD’s current rates before relying on them. Drought surcharges add a further $0.17 to $0.92 per unit if the district activates its water shortage plan.

How much water is leaking?

Local water bills show usage in units (HCF). One unit equals 748 gallons. Because BCVWD bills every two months, use the day count printed on your own bill, which is usually around 60. Enter your normal usage and your latest bill to get a rough daily estimate.

Use the numbers printed on your bills. This is a rough estimate only.

A running toilet can waste a lot of water every day, and a leaking supply line under pressure can waste even more. If the calculator shows a large, steady increase and nothing changed at home, take it seriously.

Rule out toilets and irrigation

The toilet dye test

  • Put a few drops of food coloring in each toilet tank (not the bowl).
  • Don’t flush for 15 to 20 minutes.
  • If color shows up in the bowl, the flapper is leaking. It’s a cheap part and an easy fix.

Irrigation checks

  • Run each sprinkler zone and look for geysers, weak heads or pooling water.
  • Walk the yard for soggy spots or patches that stay green when everything else is dry.
  • With irrigation off, check whether the meter still moves. If it stops, irrigation was the likely cause.

Signs the leak is under the concrete slab

If toilets and irrigation are fine and the meter still moves, you may have a leak in the concrete slab under your foundation. Look for the signs below, or read our full guide on the signs of a slab leak:

  • A warm or hot spot on the floor, often from a hot water line
  • The sound of running water with everything off
  • Damp carpet, lifting flooring or cracked tile with no obvious cause
  • A water heater that seems to run more than usual
  • Mildew smell or moisture along baseboards

At this point, guesswork gets expensive. A slab leak detection visit finds the exact spot without breaking anything open. If it’s more likely outside or in a wall, see water leak detection.

What to do about the high bill

  • Fix the leak first. Every day it runs adds to the bill.
  • Keep records. Save the bills, meter photos and the repair invoice.
  • Call your water provider. For many Beaumont homes that’s Beaumont-Cherry Valley Water District; your bill shows who it is. Ask whether a leak adjustment or bill credit is available once the leak is repaired.
  • Check your insurance if there’s water damage. See our notes in the slab leak cost guide.

Questions homeowners ask

How often does Beaumont-Cherry Valley Water District bill?

Most BCVWD customers are billed every two months, not monthly. That is why a hidden leak here can run close to 60 days before a bill reveals it, and why the meter test matters more in Beaumont than in cities with monthly billing.

How much does a slab leak add to a water bill in Beaumont?

It depends on the leak rate. A leak of 6 gallons an hour adds about 11.6 units to a 60-day cycle, which works out to roughly $34 to $45 at 2026 rates. A 60 gallon an hour leak adds about 115 units, or $336 to $445, and pushes the bill into the highest tier.

Can you have a slab leak and not know it?

Yes, and it is common. Water escaping under concrete often soaks into the soil instead of surfacing. Many leaks are found only when a bill jumps, a floor turns warm, or the meter is checked. Small leaks can run for months.

Will BCVWD give me a leak adjustment?

Ask them directly once the leak is repaired. Policies vary and can change, so keep your bills, meter photos and the repair invoice. Having a dated repair record makes the conversation much easier.

Can rain cause a slab leak?

Rain does not puncture a pipe, but it can move soil. Wet and dry cycles make expansive soil swell and shrink, and that movement puts stress on rigid lines under the slab. A leak that appears after a wet spell often started well before it.

Can a leak in a concrete slab be fixed without digging?

Often, yes. Rerouting runs a new line through the attic or walls and leaves the floor intact. Whether it fits depends on the pipe’s condition and the home’s layout. See pipe rerouting for how that works.
